Behold, in the cross all consists, and in our dying thereon all lies! For there is no other way to life and to true inward peace, but the way of the cross and of daily mortification. Walk where you will, seek whatever you will, you will not find a higher way above, nor a safer way below, than the way of the cross. Dispose and order all things according to your will and judgment, and you will find that you must always suffer somewhat, either willingly or against your will, and so you will ever find the cross. For either you will feel pain in body, or suffer tribulation of spirit in the soul. Sometimes you will be forsaken of God, sometimes you will be troubled by your neighbor; and, what is more often you will be wearisome to your own self. Neither can you be delivered or eased by any remedy or comfort; but so long as it pleases God you ought to bear it. For God will have you learn to suffer tribulation without comfort so that you subject yourself wholly to Him, and by tribulation become more humble. No man so feels in his heart the passion of Christ as he who suffers. The cross therefore is always ready, and everywhere awaits you. You cannot escape it wherever you run; for wherever you go, you carry yourself with you, and will ever find yourself.
